Fr.Julius Kumar msc online!

Many of you must be wondering as to what happened to Julius in Rome. He is safe and sound. He is very much in touch with the members of the Union. He has begun his course in the Salesian University. As an outcome of his just-began studies, he invests a little time in sharing his thoughts in his own blog JECOM. This blog is a little advanced in outlook and presents videos and songs also. He also writes reflections and meditations in his blog. Though he is out of Kombayanpatti, his heart and mind is still there, ha ha ha...

New Blog! CHEVALIER NOTES

It is a blessing to all of us in the Union that Rev. Fr. Dennis Murphy is with us as part of the Union. He is the Senior-most person in the Union. His guidance and support is very much felt in the Union as well as personally. One great service among the many that he is putting himself in, is to bring out the issues in the form of Chevalier Notes. In Chevalier Notes, he tries to bring out a spirituality based on the charism of our Founder Fr. Jules Chevalier to be practised in our own situation. He takes all the initiative to motivate the members of the Union in giving them the Spiritual Input whenever he brings out the Notes. It is my ardent desire to put them online for a wider circle, to be available for people around the globe. He is a great scholar, and his ability to spiritually motivate everyone in the Union is appreciated universally by the MSC family. We wish him good luck and pray continually for his health.

New Indonesian Provincial: Fr. Johanis Mangkey

Most of us met Father Johanis Mangkey. He came to India on a visit to meet us all in Fr. Malcolm's time. Very nice man and often found to be very quiet. When I was in Rome, i could see how busy he was and felt: no wonder, Fr. Michael (the then Father General) wanted him there. He was certainly a very efficient man. He is made the new Indonesian Provincial on the ninth of February, 2008. He has also written a book "A Model for the Mission of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart in the light of the spirituality of the Heart." I have been hunting to get a good photo of Fr. Mangkey. I do not know for sure where Frs, Yonas Tandayu and Vianney Untu have gone - must be very busy with their own work. I will contact them soon and get them to write to us.
Meanwhile, we congratulate Fr. Johanis Mangkey for accepting this difficult task (He's just come out of the Generalate!) and wish all the members of the Province a great moment in their history.

Happy Lent!

Lent is an old English word meaning 'lengthen'. Lent is observed in spring, when the days begin to get longer. They are called Lent because that is the Old English word for spring, the season of the year during which they fall. This is something unique to English. In almost all other languages its name is a derivative of the Latin term Quadragesima, or "the forty days." We start our Lent today with the Ash Wednesday. Let us pray that this Lent of ours be meaningful and grace filled. Let us dedicate all our efforts of this Lent to the unity and peace of our Union. In 'Strong and Constant' Fr. Anderson reflects that 'through your pain, you will discover me'. We should never stop at discovering that we are going through pain alone, we also have the responsibility to discover God in that pain. Lent is a good time to do that.

Please find the message of Pope in Lent in the following link:

Generalate's Website Update

Fr. Luis Carlos Araujo Moraes

Fr. Luis Carlos Araujo Moraes MSC is our General Secretary at the Generalate. He has put in a lot of work in redesigning the website of our Generalate with the help of Fr. Stephen Cuyos MSC. He has written to all the provinces, proprovinces and unions already about the importance of communication within our Congregation.

It is indeed a pressing need within MSC that we have good communication with each other. Already this concept of communication has been targetted within our Union often in recent times, that we need to forsee and put our hands together in bringing unity within us. One way of bringing unity in the Union is that we respect the other by sharing the necessary information of the mission and life of the Union and never take anyone for granted.
Internet, as Fr. Luis Carlos Araujo Moraes MSC observes, is not a possibility for everyone around the world, but it is certainly the trend today, a sign of the time. My sole intention of creating this blog also carries a similar venture: to bring people together.

Common Vision for Formation in MSC

This is the letter Fr.Arci wrote regarding a common vision for formation in the Chevalier Family. It is so fitting for all those who are in our Union since most of us are in the formation. Chevalier Bhavan, Hridhaya Bhavan, Chevalier Novitiate and Hridhayalaya are formation houses in India. Apart from that we have a very few ministries outside such as two remote village parishes (Gangapuram and Kombayanpatti in Tamil Nadu) and a city parish (OLSH, Bangalore) and a school in Dindigul which is still blooming. Formation is still our first priority. We pray for the Formators: Fr. John Peter (Superior of Chevalier Bhavan), Fr. Joseph Christy (Superior of Hridhaya Bhavan), Fr. Tony Bolt (Superior and Novice Master of Chevalier Novitiate) and Fr. Sagayraj (Superior of Hridhayalaya and also their assistances.

Rome, January 7th, 2008
Dear Father/Brother,

As you know we as members of the Chevalier Family enjoy a common vision and charism which is lived out in a Spirituality of the Heart. In order to live and promote a Spirituality of the Heart which is shared by the religious and lay members of the Chevalier Family, we need an effective formative process. Because we consider updating formation in the light of the Spirituality of the Heart as central to the realization of our mission as members of Fr. Chevalier’s Family, we have decided, at our Tri-Generalate Meeting, to ask the Cor Novum Team at Issoudun to assist Provinces to work in the formation and development of local and regional teams around the world in the Chevalier Family. These teams will attempt to do locally and regionally what Cor Novum is doing at Issoudun.

Because of the above development, the purpose of this letter is to inform you that at the level of the Tri-Generalate a process is being started whereby it is hoped that some consensus might be able to develop around a common vision of formation in the Chevalier Family. If you have any ideas or suggestions regarding what you consider to be essential elements towards the formulation of a common vision of formation in the Chevalier Family, please send them to Cor Novum by 1st April 2008. At a later stage there will be a broader discussion involving all those who have responsibility in the area of formation. We would like to emphasize that formation in this context embraces the whole life span from initial formation to the later stage of on-going formation in the wisdom years. We also invite you, whenever possible, to enter into dialogue with other congregations of the Chevalier Family concerning formation in the light of the Spirituality of the Heart.

In the Heart of Jesus,

Narciso V. Abellana, MSC

For Mark McDonald, MSC, Superior-General

COR NOVUM down through the years...

This contains some useful information about Our International Spirituality Centre, COR NOVUM at Issoudun:

Ten years ago, on September 4, 1995, Fr. Michael Curran MSC officially opened the International Centre “Cor Novum” in Issoudun. That day he acted not only on behalf of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart but also of the Daughters of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart and the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart. In his opening address, Fr. Curran described the origin of the idea to start this Intercongregational and International Centre. After Vatican II, the three religious societies that stem from Fr. Chevalier, began to take a fresh look at their Founder’s charism. Fr. Jim Cuskelly as Superior General spearheaded this work. All over the world, individual members and communities of the Chevalier Family keenly followed the rediscovery of our charism. They began to understand more fully the breadth of the founder’s vision and to search for a deeper understanding of our common spirituality and mission in today’s world.

The name “Cor Novum” (New Heart) summarizes very well the purpose of the Centre; that is, to study and to promote the charism of Fr. Chevalier and the Spirituality of the Heart in today’s world. Members of the Cor Novum team are engaged in research and writing in relation to our Charism and Mission and offer programs designed for the spiritual and ministerial formation of all members of the Chevalier Family. These programs have been presented both in Issoudun and, on invitation, in different areas throughout the world.

Since its erection in September 1995, 635 FDNSC and MSC men and women have come to Issoudun to attend programs offered by Cor Novum. A great number of sisters, brothers and fathers have also participated in programs abroad, given by members of the Cor Novum team. Over the 10 Years the program called “Spirituality of the Heart: Yesterday, Today and towards the Future” has been given 13 times in Issoudun. Various other programs have been presented in response to different needs. For example programs for “Formation for Formators”, “Peace and Justice”, Leadership skills” and “Dialogue”. Occasionally, there have been specific programs for Bishops, for the Tri-Generalate Administration, for those preparing to live in international missionary communities or for final vows. All these programs have been rooted in the Founder’s charism and Spirituality of the heart. Worthy of mentioning is also the “Symposium in Memory of E.J. Cuskelly MSC” (September 2003), attended by not less than 80 participants including 190 lay participants. More than 30 members have also followed personalized programs including individually designed Sabbaticals and 30-day retreats.

A common characteristic of all the programs in Issoudun and abroad has been a “holistic approach”. We have been looking at the past, discovering more and more the wide scope of Fr. Chevalier’s vision and the inspiring message of his life experience. We contemplated the depth and breadth pf God’s love revealed in the Heart of Jesus. We followed the journey into our own hearts discovering our deeper desires and fixation; and we reflected upon the future of the world where our international mission leads us. However, what programs abroad were unable to offer was, what is called, “the Issoudun experience”: following the footsteps of Fr. Chevalier in Issoudun, where he lived for 53 years, in Richelieu where he was born and grew up and in Bourges where he prepared himself for the priesthood. Participants of the programs in Issoudun have witnessed how they could feel and touch his presence in the Basilica, Our Lady’s Chapel, the Crypt and the impressive monastery with the beautiful park that he left behind.
In Issoudun, the founders, directors and team members, the staff of the secretariat, the translators of the sessions, staff and personnel of the Jules Chevalier Centre where Cor Novum finds accommodation, and the MSC and OLSH communities of Issoudun, - all have contributed to the growth of Cor Novum and its ministry during these 10 years. But above all we should mention the many sisters, brothers and fathers form all over the world who have followed the programs of Cor Novum in Issoudun or abroad and who have been renewed in their practical way of living a Spirituality of the Heart. They are really a beautiful present for us who celebrate this jubilee.
